CarolBrass: the Taiwanese brass artisan who conquered musicians worldwide

It is rare for a wind instrument brand to establish itself so quickly on the international stage. CarolBrass, born in Taiwan in the late 1980s, is one of those pleasant surprises: in barely three decades it has gone from a small family workshop to a world reference for quality brass instruments. Trumpets, cornets, trombones, bugles and even mouthpieces — the Taiwanese brand has earned a solid reputation among musicians, teachers and orchestras, won over by a remarkable value for money and exemplary manufacturing consistency.

What sets CarolBrass apart is, above all, a philosophy: that of a well-designed, well-adjusted and durable instrument, accessible at every level. Where other manufacturers reserve their finest craftsmanship for professional ranges, CarolBrass applies the same standards across its entire catalogue. The result: a beginner trumpet player and an accomplished soloist alike find a reliable, in-tune and enjoyable instrument that fears neither comparison nor the passing of time. This is why renowned artists, such as the legendary Arturo Sandoval, have adopted its instruments.

From Hoxon Gakki to CarolBrass: the story of a family passion

It all begins in April 1989, when Kim Lee and his wife Carol Lo found a small family company called Hoxon Gakki in Taoyuan, northern Taiwan. The name pays tribute to Kim's father, Hoxon, while "Gakki" means "musical instruments" in Taiwanese. From the outset, the ambition is clear: to craft brass instruments of impeccable quality, at the service of all musicians. Eighteen months of relentless work are needed before the brand's very first B-flat trumpet leaves the workshop in October 1990, bearing serial number 000001.

The following years see the company grow and diversify its craftsmanship: the first cornet appears in 1998, the same year as the pocket trumpet, followed by the first tenor trombone in 2001. In 2002, the family decides to launch its own brand, Carol, with four founding models: Legend, Deluxe, Junior and Pioneer. It is the start of an international adventure. In 2011, Kim, now known as Carl Lee in honour of his late wife, renames the brand CarolBrass and presents his first piccolo trumpet at the NAMM Show, with the support of his American distributor Doug Teeter.

Since then, CarolBrass has never stopped innovating, stacking up patents and awards: mini pocket trumpet, mini bugle, desk trombone and, more recently, the "Saxy" trumpet launched in 2023. The company has even opened an interactive "tourist factory" to introduce the general public to the making of wind instruments. So many steps that testify to a brand that is alive, curious and deeply attached to its craft.

Trombones and cornets: precision at the service of harmony

Tenor trombones: the depth of the sound

CarolBrass does not stop at trumpets. The brand also offers tenor trombones that share the same demand for quality and the same care in adjustment. The CarolBrass PJL5L Tenor Trombone and the CarolBrass PJL5R Tenor Trombone make excellent entry-level choices, with a fluid slide and a warm sound. The more advanced models, such as the CarolBrass PJL7L Tenor Trombone and the CarolBrass PCL7L Tenor Trombone, offer greater projection and precision in the extreme registers, perfect for orchestral sections or jazz sections.

Cornets: the soul of the brass band

On the cornet side, CarolBrass asserts its British heritage: the CarolBrass PAR5L B-flat Cornet is a versatile and accessible instrument, while the CarolBrass ALB7L B-flat Cornet and the CarolBrass PDT7L B-flat Cornet win over brass band players with their round tone and intonation. Each cornet is designed to blend harmoniously into the ensemble while keeping an assertive personality in solo.

CarolBrass mouthpieces: the detail that changes everything

A trumpet or a trombone is only as good as its mouthpiece, and CarolBrass has fully understood this. The brand offers a complete range of mouthpieces that reproduce the most requested standards, with a remarkable finish. For the trumpet, the CarolBrass 7C Trumpet Mouthpiece is the versatile reference, while the CarolBrass 3C Trumpet Mouthpiece offers more width for a fuller sound, and the CarolBrass 1 1/2C Trumpet Mouthpiece suits thick lips and low registers.

For the trombone, the CarolBrass 6 1/2AL Trombone Mouthpiece is the great classic for orchestral players, and the CarolBrass 12C Trombone Mouthpiece wins players over with its brilliance and easy emission in the high register. Changing mouthpiece is the simplest and most economical way to evolve your sound: an excellent way to explore the CarolBrass world before investing in an instrument.

Manufacturing philosophy: the demand from material to final adjustment

What makes CarolBrass's reputation is an obsession with detail that runs through the entire manufacturing process. The brand is known for its "Materials Offered" series, which explores the influence of different alloys and materials on vibration and tone. By choosing brass, copper and alloys selected for their acoustic properties, CarolBrass achieves instruments of remarkable tonal homogeneity, where every note responds with the same harmonic richness.

Factory adjustment is another strong point of the house: pistons, slides and bells are carefully checked to guarantee smooth action and stable intonation across the entire range. The finishes, whether lacquered or silver-plated, are applied with rigour, and every instrument is tested before leaving the workshop. It is this consistency that has won over teachers and orchestras around the world: a CarolBrass fresh out of its case is ready to play.
