Fender: when a radio repairman invented the modern electric guitar

Few brands can claim to have changed the course of music history. Fender is one of them. From the Stratocaster to the Telecaster, via the Precision Bass and Jazz Bass, the instruments created by Leo Fender and his team have defined the sound of rock, blues, country, funk and many other genres. More than seventy years after the company was founded, Fender guitars and basses remain the most played, most copied, and most revered in the world.

Whether you're a collector looking for a vintage model, a musician searching for your first electric guitar, or simply a music history enthusiast, dive with us into the fascinating world of the spaghetti logo brand.

Leo Fender: the man who never learned to play guitar

The Fender story begins with a paradox: Clarence Leonidas "Leo" Fender, founder of the world's most famous electric guitar brand, couldn't play the guitar. Not a single note. What interested him wasn't the music itself, but the engineering: how to build a reliable, easy-to-repair instrument with a powerful, clear sound that could be mass-produced at an affordable price.

Born in 1909 in California, Leo Fender started his career as an accountant before opening a radio repair shop in Fullerton in 1938, Fender Radio Service. Soon, musicians were bringing him their tube amplifiers. Leo repaired them, improved them, and then began making his own. In 1946, he founded the Fender Electric Instrument Manufacturing Company. The rest is history.

The models that changed music

The Telecaster: the first mass-produced solid-body electric guitar

In 1950, Fender launched the Broadcaster, quickly renamed Telecaster for trademark reasons. It was a revolution: an ash or alder body, a bolted maple neck, two single-coil pickups, and a fixed bridge. Simple, robust, effective. The Telecaster immediately became the weapon of choice for country guitarists, then rock, blues, and indie. From Keith Richards to Bruce Springsteen, from Joe Strummer to John 5, the Telecaster is the embodiment of no-frills efficiency.

The Stratocaster: the absolute icon

In 1954, Fender took another leap with the Stratocaster. Contoured body (sculpted to fit the musician's body), three pickups instead of two, a revolutionary synchronized vibrato, and futuristic design by automotive artist Freddy Tavares. The Stratocaster was immediately adopted by legendary guitarists like Buddy Holly, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jeff Beck and Mark Knopfler. Today, it remains the most popular and versatile electric guitar ever created.

The Precision Bass and Jazz Bass: the invention of the electric bass

In 1951, Leo Fender solved a major problem for orchestras of the time: the double bass was too bulky, hard to amplify, and difficult to transport. He created the Precision Bass, the first mass-produced electric bass. Its success was such that it completely redefined the role of the bass in popular music. In 1960, Fender launched the Jazz Bass, with a slimmer neck, two pickups, and a brighter, more articulate sound. These two models remain the absolute benchmarks of the electric bass, used by Jaco Pastorius, Marcus Miller, Flea, Geddy Lee and so many others.

The Fender legacy: much more than guitars

Beyond instruments, Fender has always been a major cultural player. Its amplifiers - from the legendary Twin Reverb to the Deluxe Reverb and Bassman - have defined the sound of generations of musicians. The brand has also been a pioneer in music education with Fender Play, its online learning platform, and in building musician communities worldwide.

Bought back by its own employees in 1985 (the infamous "CBS years" having ended), Fender is now a company run by enthusiasts who continue to innovate while respecting Leo's legacy. From affordable Player Series models to high-end American Ultra, through the Vintera reissues and artist signature models, Fender offers a range for every budget and every style.

And let's not forget the other brands in the group: Squier (the affordable little siblings), Jackson, Charvel, EVH, Gretsch and Bigsby. A true empire built on the vision of a radio repairman who couldn't play a single chord.
