Keeley: premium boutique effects pedals since 2002

Keeley Engineering, founded by Robert Keeley in Oklahoma, is one of the most respected brands in the world of boutique guitar effects pedals. What many guitarists don't know is that Robert Keeley didn't start by making pedals, but by modifying those of others. His famous Boss and Ibanez mods — done by hand, component by component — quickly earned a legendary reputation among discerning guitarists. Today, Keeley designs and manufactures its own original pedals, from reference compressors to the most advanced overdrives, as well as stereo delays and complete multi-effects stations.

At Green Musicians, we offer over 39 Keeley pedals in stock, sourced through our short supply chain with the brand. New products, guaranteed for 2 years, at prices that defy the competition thanks to our direct distribution model.

What to remember

  • ✔︎ Born from mods: Robert Keeley started in 2001 by modifying Boss DS-1, BD-2 and Ibanez Tube Screamer pedals, before launching the first Keeley Compressor in 2002

  • ✔︎ Handcrafted American manufacturing: every pedal is assembled and tested by hand in Edmond, Oklahoma

The story of Keeley Engineering: from mods to boutique legend

Robert Keeley launched Keeley Electronics in 2001 from his garage in Edmond, Oklahoma. At first, his activity consisted of modifying existing effects pedals — mainly Boss DS-1, BD-2 and Ibanez Tube Screamer units. His methodical approach, replacing components with higher-quality parts and optimising circuits, quickly caught the attention of professional guitarists. Keeley mods became so renowned that musicians from all over the world sent their pedals to Oklahoma to be transformed.

Building on this success, Robert Keeley made the leap to original design in 2002 with the first Keeley Compressor. This pedal, based on the classic OTA compressor circuit but optimised with precision components and a blend control, became an absolute reference. It sat on the pedalboards of Brad Paisley, John Mayer and The Edge, and remains to this day the benchmark against which all other guitar compressors are judged.

Over the years, Keeley extended its catalogue to every type of effect: overdrives, fuzz, delays, reverbs, loopers, phasers, and even multi-effects stations like the Loomer Workstation. Every pedal is designed with a common philosophy: exceptional sound, bulletproof reliability, and controls thought out for stage musicians. In 2022, to celebrate its 20th anniversary, Keeley released the Realizer pedal, a reverb-delay that perfectly embodies the know-how accumulated over two decades of innovation.

The Keeley pedal ranges available at Green Musicians

1. Compressors: the absolute reference

Keeley compressors are the historic heart of the brand. The Keeley Compressor Plus perfected the original formula with a blend control, a single/double coil switch and a tone control. It's the compressor found on country, pop and fusion pedalboards around the world. For those who want the Keeley sound in a minimalist format, the Compressor Mini offers the essential controls in a compact 1590A enclosure.

2. Overdrives and fuzz: from blues to extreme saturation

The Keeley overdrive and fuzz range is one of the richest on the boutique market. From the Noble Screamer, which reinvents the Tube Screamer with more clarity and dynamics, to the Moon Op Amp Fuzz inspired by the fuzzes of the 70s, every pedal brings a personal, accomplished take on a classic sound.

3. Delay and reverb: space and depth

Keeley has invested heavily in time-based effects, with stereo delays, luxurious reverbs, and particularly accomplished delay-reverb combinations. The Realizer pedal, released for the brand's 21st anniversary, perfectly illustrates this know-how by offering 8 reverb and delay algorithms in a single enclosure.

4. Loopers and multi-effects stations

Keeley also offers pedals combining several functions. The Loomer Workstation is a complete multi-effects station integrating fuzz, reverb and MIDI control, ideal for shoegaze and ambient guitarists. The Eccos is a stereo looper with built-in delay, perfect for loop-based performances.

5. Phaser, modulation and filters

Keeley also explores modulation effects with original approaches. The Vintage Phaser recreates the warm sound of 70s analog phasers, while the Bubble Tron offers an envelope follower filter inspired by the most creative funk sounds. The Octa Psi combines octave, pitch shifting and fuzz in a single pedal.

6. Bass pedals

Keeley hasn't forgotten bassists. The Bassist Limiting LFO is a compressor-limiter designed specifically for bass, with an LFO circuit that creates subtle modulation effects while maintaining perfect dynamic control. It's the ideal tool for bassists who want a full, punchy, consistent sound whatever the style.

Keeley vs. other boutique brands

Keeley sits in the premium boutique pedal segment, alongside brands like Strymon (the reference for digital delays and reverbs), Walrus Audio (design and atmospheres) or MXR (classic high-volume pedals). Where Strymon excels at ultra-precise digital processing, Keeley shines with its analog circuits and handcrafted approach. Where Walrus Audio focuses on aesthetics and experimentation, Keeley favours musicality and on-stage efficiency. And while MXR offers affordable, timeless pedals, Keeley moves upmarket with more sophisticated circuits and advanced features like blend on the compressor or stereo delays.

The choice between these brands depends on your priorities: Strymon for digital perfection, Walrus Audio for atmosphere and design, MXR for simplicity and history, Keeley for handcrafted American sound and innovation in analog circuits.

FAQ: your questions about Keeley pedals

Which Keeley pedal to start with?

If you've never played a Keeley pedal, the Compressor Plus (187,50€) is the ideal entry point. It's the pedal that built the brand's reputation, and it will immediately transform the sound of your guitar. For overdrives, the Noble Screamer (245,83€) is a versatile choice that suits every amp.

Are Keeley pedals true bypass?

Most Keeley pedals use true bypass to preserve signal integrity when the pedal is off. Some pedals, like the Compressor Plus, use a high-quality buffer that keeps the signal intact even in long cable runs. Keeley chooses the bypass type best suited to each circuit.

What power supply for Keeley pedals?

Keeley pedals run on 9V DC centre-negative power, drawing generally between 20 and 100 mA depending on the model. They're compatible with standard supplies like Voodoo Lab Pedal Power, CIOKS or Harley Benton PowerPlant. Check the exact draw of each pedal in the Keeley documentation. Most also accept a 9V battery, except high-draw models like the Loomer Workstation.

Are Keeley pedals made in the United States?

Yes. Keeley Engineering assembles and tests all its pedals in Edmond, Oklahoma, USA. Robert Keeley personally supervises circuit design. Some electronic components are sourced internationally, but assembly, quality testing and finishing are done on site.

Can Keeley pedals be used with a bass amp?

Most Keeley pedals designed for guitar also work with bass, but some lose clarity in the low frequencies. For optimal results, Keeley offers the Bassist Limiting LFO, designed specifically for bass. Reverbs and delays like the Caverns work very well on bass for ambient textures.

What's the difference between the Compressor Plus and the Compressor Mini?

The Compressor Plus (187,50€) offers a blend control, a single/double coil switch and a tone control, making it a complete compressor for every context. The Compressor Mini (162,50€) keeps the core Keeley compressor sound in a compact format with just two controls (Compression and Level). Ideal if you're short on pedalboard space.

Where to buy Keeley pedals in France?

Expert tips for fitting Keeley into your pedalboard

  • Place the compressor at the start of the chain, right after the tuner, to stabilise the signal before the other effects
  • The Aria Compressor Overdrive can replace two pedals: it combines compressor and overdrive in a single enclosure, ideal for a minimalist pedalboard
  • Keeley stereo delays: if your amp has a stereo effects loop, run the Halo Core or Eccos in stereo for spectacular panoramic sound
  • The D&M Drive as a dual channel: use the first stage as a boost and the second as your main overdrive for versatile stage sounds
  • Experiment with the Octa Psi: it combines octave, pitch shifting and fuzz — perfect for experimental textures in the style of Jack White or Muse
  • Save your settings: Keeley pedals have no presets, so note your knob positions for each song

The pro tip

Since Keeley pedals have no presets, note your knob positions for each song — a simple notebook or a photo of the pedalboard is enough. And place the compressor at the start of the chain, right after the tuner: it stabilises the signal before all the other effects, which is the foundation of a solid country or pop sound.
