Founded in 1969 by Colin Sanders, Solid State Logic (SSL) has established itself as a leading reference in the professional audio industry. This British company, based in Begbroke in Oxfordshire, has revolutionized the world of recording, broadcasting, and live sound with its mixing consoles, signal processors, and innovative audio technologies.
SSL's rise began with the launch of the SL 4000 B Series console in 1976, which combined an in-line mixing console design with a computer offering fader automation and automatic tape transport location features. This innovation quickly captured the attention of prestigious studios like Abbey Road in London.
In 1979, SSL introduced the SL 4000 Series E, which marked a turning point in the industry. This console was the first to integrate a compressor/gate on each channel as well as the now legendary master bus compressor. The ability to save and recall mixer settings revolutionized studio workflows.
Over the years, SSL continued to innovate with iconic products such as:
- The SL 4000 Series G (1987): With its redesigned equalizer, it became a standard in professional studios.
- The SL 9000 Series J: Introducing the SuperAnalogue design for very high bandwidth and extremely low distortion.
- The AWS 900 console (2004): Combining an analog console and a DAW controller, it redefined the concept of a hybrid studio.
- Duality (2006): A large-format console combining the mixing features of the XL 9000K with the control functions of the AWS 900.
SSL has established itself in three key sectors:
1. Music Production: SSL consoles are synonymous with studio excellence. In 1996, 83% of number one singles had been produced on an SSL console.
2. Broadcast: With the System T, SSL offers a fully networked broadcast platform adopted by major broadcasters like TVI in Portugal.
3. Live Sound: SSL combines exceptional audio quality with flexible architecture, appealing to tours, theaters, and places of worship worldwide.
Today, SSL continues to innovate with products like:
- The System T: A digital broadcast platform with native Dante support and immersive mixing capabilities.
- The range of USB audio interfaces like the SSL 2+ MKII, bringing SSL quality to home studios.
- Outboard processors like the PURE DRIVE OCTO, offering the legendary SSL sound in a rack format.
With over 3000 SSL installations worldwide by 2004, the brand has made a lasting mark on the audio industry. SSL claims that more platinum albums have been recorded on its consoles than on any other combined equipment. This omnipresence in professional studios, coupled with a reputation for innovation, excellence, and exceptional customer support, makes Solid State Logic an essential reference for top-level producers, engineers, and musicians.
From music to broadcasting to live sound, Solid State Logic continues to push the boundaries of audio technology, ensuring its position as a leader in the industry for years to come.
